How to read these numbers

Every height on this page is measured from MLLW, mean lower low water. That is the chart datum used on US nautical charts and in printed tide tables. A predicted 2.1 feet means 2.1 feet above that reference line, not 2.1 feet of water under your boat.

Predictions are astronomical. They account for the pull of the moon and sun and nothing else, which is why they can be published years ahead. What they cannot account for is weather. Wind pushing water toward the coast, a low pressure centre passing offshore, or heavy river discharge all move the real water level away from the prediction.

That is what the observed comparison above is for. When observed water level runs a foot or more above prediction with a storm offshore, the difference is surge, and it is the number that matters more than the tide table itself.
